Martin Löhlein - Development Director

What is your job at EA Phenomic?
My core task is project management. While the Creative Director decides on the "what“, the Development Director is responsible for the "how“. How is the team structured? How much time is planned for what? How are responsibilities shared within the team? How do we keep the project's scope under control? How do we make sure that everyone gets the information they need?

What does your daily work look like?
It's all about communication. So my day to day work consists of many meetings that have to be initiated and moderated, talks with designers and Development Managers (project managers for certain sections), conference calls with other EA studios and heaps of e-mails to work through.
Additionally, the project's status has to be analysed and visualised. Current issues have to be evaluated and resolved. Risks have to be determined and controlled.
But at the end of most days you also manage to grab some free minutes to play the game…

I'm especially proud of this personal contribution to BattleForge…
As you can see reading about my tasks, my contribution to BattleForge is mostly of an indirect nature. But I did contribute one idea: to combine cards collection and deck-building with a sandbox, where you can test cards at once and pitch all units against each other.

What do you like best about working in the games industry?
It's a job I can identify with. The team spirit in the industry is great. And every project is different, with new challenges each time.

What do you like most about BattleForge?
BattleForge is not only a game, but also a service. I'm looking forward to keeping contact to the community and developing BattleForge continuously after the release.
As an RTS player, I like the fast and direct core game with loads of urgent and complex decisions to be made. Add to this the extra strategic layer of building your own deck. Show me one RTS player who has never wished to be able to tailor his faction to his personal style…

Fire, Frost, Nature or Shadow?
Multi-colour, no doubt about it. :) The aggressive expansion of Fire paired with the endurance of Nature offers the flexibility that suits my playing style best.

Do you have a favourite unit in the game?
The Northguards. They differ from other units in not having a special skill – and that is so rare in BattleForge that it's a specialty in itself.

Complete this sentence: On the day BattleForge is released...
I'll jump from one server statistic to the next: What is played more often - PvP or PvE? How many players dare to try the 12-player maps right away? Will trading start on the first day? Are there auctions held? Which cards are most popular?
